Mulank, Bhagyank and Naamank: the three basic numbers of Indian numerology
Indian numerology (अंक ज्योतिष) starts with three numbers. Two come from your date of birth and one from your name. Each is reduced to a single digit from 1 to 9, and each digit is linked to a planet: 1 Sun, 2 Moon, 3 Jupiter, 4 Rahu, 5 Mercury, 6 Venus, 7 Ketu, 8 Saturn, 9 Mars.

Mulank (मूलांक): driver number
What it is: the number of your birth day only. It describes your basic nature: how you think, react and behave with people.
How to calculate: take the day of the month you were born. If it is 1 to 9, that is your mulank. If it has two digits, add them, and keep adding until one digit is left.
- Born on the 23rd: 2 + 3 = 5, so mulank 5
- Born on the 29th: 2 + 9 = 11, then 1 + 1 = 2, so mulank 2
मूलांक सिर्फ़ जन्म की तारीख (दिन) से निकलता है। 23 तारीख को जन्म: 2 + 3 = 5, यानी मूलांक 5।
Bhagyank (भाग्यांक): conductor or life path number
What it is: the total of your full date of birth. Numerologists read it as the direction of your life: the kind of opportunities and lessons that come up again and again. In Western numerology the same number is called the life path number.
How to calculate: write the date as DD-MM-YYYY, add every digit, and keep reducing until one digit is left.
- 23-08-1995: 2+3+0+8+1+9+9+5 = 37, then 3+7 = 10, then 1+0 = 1, so bhagyank 1

If the total before the last step is 11, 22 or 33, Western systems call it a master number. Indian practice usually still reduces it (to 2, 4 or 6), and our calculator shows both.
Naamank (नामांक): name number
What it is: the total of the letters of your name. It is read as the way you express yourself and how others see you. Unlike mulank and bhagyank, it changes if you change the spelling of your name. That is why people look at it before a name correction.

Some numerologists use the Chaldean chart instead, which gives different values to many letters. You can switch between the two in the full reading above. Use the same chart every time you compare names.

Numerologists then read the three together. Mulank describes the person, bhagyank describes the road, and naamank describes how the person is presented to the world. In the planetary friendship table this site uses, 1 (Sun) and 3 (Jupiter) are friends, and 5 (Mercury) is friendly with 1 but not with 3. So in this example the name number supports the life direction.

Mulank sirf janm ki taareekh (din) se nikalta hai aur swabhav batata hai. Bhagyank poori janm tithi se nikalta hai aur jeevan ki disha batata hai.
Can I change my mulank or bhagyank?
No. Both come from your date of birth and stay fixed. Only the naamank changes, if you change the spelling of your name.

Which chart is correct: Pythagorean or Chaldean?
Both are traditional systems with different letter values, and neither is "correct" in a scientific sense. Pick one and use it consistently.
Is numerology scientifically proven?
No. Numerology is a traditional reflective practice, not a science. Use it for self-understanding, not for medical, legal or financial decisions.
